In the Presbyterian Church (USA), leadership is invested in a board of ordained elders called the session. Elders
are lay people elected from the congregation. All major decisions are made by the session with the advice of the
Pastor. At every level of decision making in our denomination, elders are given equal voice and vote as the clergy,
ensuring that lay people have an equal say in all of the policies of our denomination.
As Christians, ministry to the sick, poor, and disenfranchised is central to our ministry. Deacons in our tradition
oversee our outreach to those in need. In the early Church, deacons ensured that widows and orphans were fed
and cared for. Modern deacons continue that ministry.
In our tradition, men and women may serve equally as elders, deacons, and pastors.
